Can they do it?

Postby Doug » Mon May 03, 2010 10:34 pm

Our reserves are currently in 2nd place with 2 matches remaining. Thanks to today's result with Maidstone ( 3rd) drawing at Cray we are now 2 points clear of them with the same number of games played. If we win our remaining 2 matches we will be runners up at least. I say at least as there is a slim chance of us being champions if Herne Bay (who are 4 points clear) slip up in their 2 remaining matches. As it stands Herne Bay only need 2 points from those games as they have a 9 goal advantage over us on goal difference.

I think I am right in saying that a few seasons back it was Maidstone who were riding high with a vastly superior goal difference and we were second but we pipped them by scoring a lot of goals (10?) in our last remaining match. Can we do it again?

Herne Bay beat Cray Wanderers last night to be crowned Division 1 Champions as the Deres went down 0-1 to Thamesmead Town.

Thamesmead included 7 first teamers in their line up and had Keith McMahon in charge of the team and struggled to to impose themselves on the Deres who had some half decent scoring chances but couldn't quite get the ball in the back of the net. We played quite well on the night and should have gained at least a point.

Unlucky boys.
If winning isn't important, why do they keep score?

Unlucky Deres but it is a credit to them only losing by the odd goal against a side fielding 7 Ryman North players.

Hopefully the remaining games can see us take runners up spot but this is not entirely in our hands as Maidstone or Dartford could now pip us by winning their remaining games. However, Maidstone have to play Dartford and Dartford have to play champions Herne Bay (all tricky games), but Maidstone should get 3 points from their match against bottom of the league Holmesdale. Our last match against Cray will not be easy.

"Funny old game". I said Maidstone should get 3 points from bottom of league Holmesdale, well it was 1-1 and the Darts lost to Herne Bay.

This now means that the runners up spot is back in our own hands again but we need to win the Cray game on Tuesday to make sure.

Well done to Clarkey, his management team and all the players in securing the runners up spot in Division 1.
